More Busy-Toy Tips

This is a great video I found online about the value of keeping your dog busy and having them “work” for their food. We had several customers today who have merely been using Peanut Butter and that is all! There are literally endless options* for stuffing Kong and Canine Genius Toys. Enjoy!

*We advise against the use of processed meats for stuffing options as they are often cured with dangerous preservatives and are much too high in sodium.  Stick to basic meats like, chicken breast and low fat, boiled hamburg.

Here is a helpful diagram for Kong Stuffing technique.  These same ideas can be applied to Canine Genius Toys and TreatStiks…

Coming soon to the Biscuit

INSPIRED BY THE GENIUS MICHELANGELO

CANINE GENIUS "MIKE"

CANINE GENIUS "MIKE"

This is a totally different shape than the Leo and is a bit more challenging.  This toy can be linked with the Leo(s) your dog already has.  Linking the Genius toys makes them more exciting as the treats you put inside can travel from Mike to Leo and back again!  Linking also makes the toys heavier so a dog (ahem, Orli) can’t just fling them violently into the wall to knock the snacks out.  They shipped from California today, so we will post on the blog and on Facebook when the Mikes arrive.  You know you want one.  Wait, I mean your dog wants one…yeah!

Breed Information-Sheltie

Every now and then, we are going to feature a specific dog breed on the Biscuit Blog.  For many people, a specific breed of dog is a great match for your family dynamic and lifestyle needs.   With each breed we feature, there will be a video or two, photos and rescue information.  Shelters are FULL of pure-bred dogs that would love a forever home.  In the rare case that you don’t find a rescue dog near you or one that suits your lifestyle, there may be a reputable breeder out there.  Please see our post about Pet Shops and Back Yard Breeders for more information on acquiring non-rescue pure-bred dogs.

Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie

Shelties are HERDING dogs!

Shelties are HERDING dogs!

Here is a Video from Animal Planet TV that is all about the Shetland Sheepdog!

And, now a video of a Sheltie being super patient!

For Rescue Information visit this website for listings by state.  Please be cautious when you fall in love with any breed.  All dogs have health problems and behavior issues and the Sheltie is no exception.  They are prone to hip dysplasia and excessive barking.  This breed is not suitable for families with young children due to their strong desire to herd anything that moves!  Shelties are high energy and amazingly smart.  They need LOTS of exercise and benefit from agility and herding classes and trials.  Shelties are perfect for active people who are not gone all day long.  Health testing is available for the common Sheltie health concerns.  Avoid breeders who can’t show proof of health testing.   Please visit this Sheltie Group website for more information on the importance of health testing.

This post is dedicated to Habibi Kent, a gorgeous Tri-Color female rescued by her Mom.  Thanks for being such loyal customers.  Habibi is soon to be featured as Dog of the Blog!

A Photographic Leo Toy-torial!

Step 1: Gather Ingredients … We used Orijen Puppy, Merrick Texas Toothpicks and Cream Cheese

Step 2: Begin filling with something dry and loose.  This is what keeps the dog motivated to keep working.  Dry kibble or small training treats work best.  If your pup is on a raw or homecooked diet (applause!), then use Orijen or Evo, as they are both grain free.  We carry small bags and trial sizes to get you started!

Step 3: Stop up the X-Marks and the Hole at the top with Chew Snacks, something creamy or both.  In this case, we are using Texas Toothpicks and cream cheese.  Other options include Bully Sticks, Peanut Butter, other cheeses, etc.

Happy, BUSY Dog!

Happy, BUSY Dog!

That’s it!  You can either give the toy immediately or freeze it first to make it a little more challenging.  These toys can also be linked together to make them heavier and more complicated.

So, stop by the Loyal Biscuit Co. to pick up a Leo or a Mini Leo for your Canine Genius!
